Yrondu Musavu-King, a Franco-Gabonese central defender who played for several Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs, was found dead Friday in Libreville, Gabon. He was 34 years old. His body was discovered at the rear of a house in the Gabonese capital; an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of his death.

Born in Libreville, Musavu-King moved to Normandy at age two, the son of Gabonese politician Augustin Moussavou-King. He joined SM Caen’s academy at 14, made his professional debut in Ligue 2 in 2013, then discovered the top flight the following season alongside N’Golo Kanté and Thomas Lemar, future 2018 World Cup winners. His career then took him to FC Lorient — where he played with Benjamin Lecomte and Raphaël Guerreiro — then Toulouse FC, alongside Alban Lafont, Martin Braithwaite and Odsonne Édouard. He also had spells with Granada and Udinese, without playing a match in La Liga or Serie A.

Wearing the Gabon Panthers shirt, Musavu-King earned 13 caps from 2013 onwards, forming the central defensive partnership eleven times with Bruno Ecuele Manga. He played alongside Didier Ovono, Mario Lemina, Denis Bouanga and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, notably at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, where Gabon was eliminated in the group stage. He ended his career in 2022 after a spell in India with Bengaluru FC.

SM Caen, FC Lorient, Toulouse FC, Le Mans FC and the UNFP paid tribute to the player. Thierry Gomez, president of Le Mans FC, expressed his sadness: “I have just learned with sadness of the death of Yrondu Musavu-King, whom I recruited during our first return to Ligue 2 in 2019-2020. I have the memory of a boy who was very respectful of the Club, competitive and humble at the same time. On behalf of the club, I extend to his family and loved ones all my support in this painful ordeal.”
