Football mourns Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel after on-field collision proves fatal
Jesus de Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest during a Spanish second-tier match on Monday. Tributes have poured in from across the football world, with Barcelona's Raphinha and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta among those to pay their respects.
Jesus de Miguel, the 30-year-old Tenerife striker, died on Tuesday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest during a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono in a Spanish second-tier fixture on Monday. The match was immediately abandoned, and although Tenerife initially reported De Miguel was stable, his condition deteriorated overnight and he passed away at 8am.
Fans gathered outside Tenerife’s home ground, the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez, to lay flowers and light candles beneath a photograph of the player. A farewell service will be held at the stadium on Saturday, open to supporters. The club announced six days of official mourning, suspending all club activities, with players, staff and officials set to attend the funeral.
A minute’s silence was observed before each of Tuesday night’s Champions League fixtures, with the same tribute to be held before all other UEFA matches this week. The Spanish Football Federation also postponed Tuesday’s Copa del Rey and Copa del Reina matches in De Miguel’s honour, extending its “deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones, as well as to Club Deportivo Tenerife and all its fans.”
Barcelona’s Raphinha, who scored twice in their Champions League win over Aston Villa on Tuesday, addressed the tragedy after the final whistle. “Today I don’t want to talk about football,” he said. “I want to send a message to the family of Jesus — may he rest in peace. From the club, I want to send a message of strength to the family.”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta described the news as “heartbreaking” at a press conference, saying: “To see a colleague lose his life in such a manner, it’s beyond any words that I can put today.”
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho called it “something very shocking for the world in general, so imagine for the world of football, for people like us who are on the pitch competing every day.” Mourinho also expressed concern for Owono, who received a straight red card following the collision and has since deactivated his Instagram account, describing it as a “very, very, very difficult moment” for the goalkeeper.
Spanish police have opened a routine investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, a standard procedure under national law whenever a death is deemed non-natural.
