Draw in Bodø keeps LOSC alive but in near-desperate situation
Held to a 0-0 draw in Norway by FK Bodø/Glimt, Lille finally opens its account in the UEFA Champions League but sits in 34th place with just one point. The Dogues will need to win almost all of their remaining four matches to reach the playoff round.
LOSC grabbed a point on the synthetic pitch of FK Bodø/Glimt (0-0) during the fifth matchday of the UEFA Champions League league phase on Wednesday evening in Norway. A result that finally gets Lille on the board, but leaves the northern club in serious trouble: 34th in the standings with just one point at the halfway mark.
Davide Ancelotti’s side delivered a solid performance against a Norwegian team unbeaten at home for six matches. In the first half, Lille clearly dominated, with the best chance of the opening period coming from Dilane Bakwa (31st minute), whose shot was pushed away by goalkeeper Nikita Haikin. In the second half, the Scandinavian revival forced goalkeeper Berke Özer into four decisive saves. The introduction of Olivier Giroud in the 70th minute was not enough to force a decision.
Captain Benjamin André summed up the collective frustration in his post-match interview: “We were a bit backed into a corner. To get back on track, we needed a win. We played a coherent and serious match, but we lacked the intensity in front of goal to seal this game.” Refusing to give up, he added: “The matches within our reach, we’ll need to win them all. This is the Champions League, we need to pull off miracles.”
Davide Ancelotti shared this assessment of the lack of attacking edge, while placing regrets elsewhere: “We only lacked the efficiency to make the most of the control we had in the first half. I’m happy, we’re gaining more and more certainty. The regrets aren’t from today, they’re from the home defeats against Betis (2-3) and Galatasaray (2-4).”
To secure a top-24 finish and a playoff spot, LOSC will now need to produce an almost perfect run over their final four matches: Bayern Munich, Slovan Bratislava, Stuttgart and AS Roma. The margin for error has been reduced to zero.
