FIFA Rankings: Morocco threatened by Belgium and Germany after dominant victories
Seventh in the FIFA rankings, Morocco sees its direct pursuers — Belgium and Germany — close the gap after convincing wins during the 2026 World Cup preparation window.
Morocco remains seventh in the FIFA rankings, but its position is weakening after a friendly match window that favored several of its direct competitors. While the Lions of the Atlas beat Madagascar 4-0 on Tuesday, Belgium and Germany earned precious points on Saturday.
Rudi Garcia’s Red Devils crushed Tunisia 5-0 in Brussels, while the Mannschaft won 2-1 against the United States in Chicago. These two results allow both nations to narrow the gap significantly with Morocco in the world hierarchy.
The teams directly ahead of Morocco also negotiated their weekend well. England (4th) beat New Zealand 1-0 thanks to a goal from Harry Kane, while Portugal (5th) won 2-1 against Chile in Lisbon. Brazil (6th) also gained ground on the Lions of the Atlas by defeating Egypt 2-1 in Cleveland.
The FIFA rankings, now updated in real time according to results, take on particular significance as the 2026 World Cup approaches. Morocco, the historic semi-finalist at Qatar in 2022 and reigning African champions — subject to the CAS decision following Senegal’s removal by the CAF appeals commission —, was not selected among the twelve seeded teams at the draw on December 5 in Washington.
The squad led by Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Díaz will begin its World Cup with a major clash against Brazil on June 14 at MetLife Stadium, in the New York suburbs. A second warm-up match against Norway on Sunday in New York will allow the Lions of the Atlas to assess their level before the tournament — and observe the evolution of their position in the world rankings.
