FFF will not pay tribute to Deschamps during Zidane's return to Stade de France
As Zinédine Zidane returns to Stade de France for two matches against Italy and Belgium, the French Football Federation has planned no ceremony to honour Didier Deschamps, who left the helm after fourteen years.
The French Football Federation will not pay tribute to Didier Deschamps during the Bleus’ next two matches at Stade de France, Friday against Italy and Monday against Belgium. According to RMC, no ceremony is planned to honour the former manager, who departed this summer after fourteen years in charge.
The FFF justified this decision by the particular context of these matches. “It’s a matter of timing,” the federation explained to RMC: attention will naturally be focused on Zinédine Zidane’s return to the Saint-Denis stadium, where he scored two goals in the 1998 World Cup final. His first two outings as head coach of the Bleus—a victory in Turkey followed by another in Belgium—have already established positive momentum around the new manager.
The next international window in November does not appear any more suitable for such a tribute. The Bleus are scheduled to play in Bordeaux on 15 November, a venue the FFF would not consider the ideal setting to celebrate Deschamps’ fourteen years leading the French national team.
Yet Deschamps’ record remains considerable: a World Cup title won in 2018 in Russia, a Euro 2016 final at home, and a longevity without equal in recent French football history. No date or venue has yet been mentioned for officially honouring him.
