Vieira reveals secret Ferguson meeting that almost took him from Arsenal to United

Patrick Vieira has revealed he once sat down with Sir Alex Ferguson to discuss a move to Manchester United, disclosing for the first time that the legendary Scot outlined a specific vision for how he would fit into the Old Trafford side.

Vieira, now head coach of Senegal, spent nine years at Arsenal between 1996 and 2005, winning three Premier League titles and four FA Cups. Despite his fierce rivalry with United — and a well-documented personal feud with Roy Keane — he confirmed that Ferguson was keen to bring him to the club, with United having been linked with the Frenchman as far back as 2003.

“I had an opportunity to move to Manchester United,” Vieira told Sky Sports. “I had a meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson. Full respect, I couldn’t say no to meeting him because he was an important figure in the Premier League.”

Ferguson’s proposed line-up was far from modest. “He wanted to play me with Keane, [Ryan] Giggs on the left-hand side, David Beckham on the right-hand side and [Paul] Scholes to play behind [Ruud] van Nistelrooy,” Vieira said. “So it wasn’t a bad team.”

Despite the appeal of the project, Vieira chose to remain at Highbury. “I couldn’t leave Arsenal, I was too happy there and we were on the way of building something quite really special for the club,” he said. “I felt the love from the club, from the players and from the fans. Everything was there for me to grow up as a player and to achieve what I wanted to.”

Meanwhile, teenage prospect JJ Gabriel has reversed course on a social media wipe that had raised concerns over his future at the club. The 15-year-old, considered one of United’s most exciting academy players, cleared his Instagram profile in early September, shortly before reports emerged that he wished to leave. He has since restored his presence on the platform.

On the pitch, Michael Carrick’s squad remains largely dispersed during the extended international break, with United not due to play again for over a week. Of the 13 senior players originally called up, several have since withdrawn through injury, including Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, Karl Darlow, Benjamin Sesko, and Patrick Dorgu, who sustained a hamstring problem while on duty for Denmark. Bruno Fernandes picked up a knock but remained with Portugal.
