Fernandes snubs Man Utd for Tottenham in £85m deal, echoing Gascoigne's greatest regret
Mateus Fernandes has joined Tottenham from West Ham in an £85million deal despite Manchester United's pursuit, mirroring Paul Gascoigne's 1988 decision to choose Spurs over United — a choice Gascoigne has repeatedly called his biggest footballing regret.
Mateus Fernandes has completed an £85million move to Tottenham Hotspur from West Ham, snubbing Manchester United despite the club holding extensive talks with the Portuguese midfielder this summer and securing Champions League football last season.
The transfer drew immediate comparisons to one of English football’s most famous transfer regrets. In 1988, a 21-year-old Paul Gascoigne was on the verge of joining Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United from Newcastle before a last-minute financial offer from Tottenham chairman Irving Scholar changed everything. Nearly four decades later, Gascoigne still cites the decision as his greatest mistake in football.
“Sir Alex Ferguson called us and said, ‘I want to sign you’ and I went, ‘OK, I’ll sign’,” Gascoigne recalled on The Rest is Football podcast. He explained that Scholar’s promise of a £120,000 payment to his father was the decisive factor. “I said, ‘Dad, it’s Tottenham’, and he said, ‘Tell them to f**** off, you’re signing for Man United’” — until the money was mentioned. “He went, ‘What are you waiting for then son?’”
Gascoigne also revealed that the deal was sweetened further with gifts for his family, including a sunbed, making the switch to White Hart Lane feel irresistible at the time.
Fernandes’ situation carries notable parallels. Reports suggest the 23-year-old, like Gascoigne, was drawn by a superior financial package from Spurs, while United were also reportedly unwilling to match the £85million upfront fee Tottenham were prepared to commit. The fee makes Fernandes one of the most expensive signings in Spurs’ history.
The decision has raised questions given the contrasting trajectories of the two clubs. United finished in the Champions League places last season, while Tottenham ended the campaign in 17th place in the Premier League — a gulf in European standing that makes the choice all the more striking.
Whether Fernandes will one day echo Gascoigne’s regret remains to be seen. But the 59-year-old’s verdict on his own career is unambiguous: given the chance, he would have chosen Old Trafford.
