Manchester United face a defining summer of contract decisions, with captain Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Altay Bayindir all entering the final year of their deals at Old Trafford ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Fernandes, who broke the Premier League assist record this season, remains United’s most pressing priority. The club holds a one-year extension option on his contract and has communicated to the Portugal international that they want him to stay beyond this summer. No new long-term deal is currently planned, though that stance could evolve during the coming campaign. Fernandes turned down an approach from Saudi side Al-Hilal last year to remain at United, though he caused a stir in December when he suggested the club had encouraged him to join them — comments that appeared to contradict the position he had outlined to reporters in October.

Martinez is also subject to a one-year extension clause. The Argentine centre-back endured a disrupted season, missing the first three months with a knee injury before a calf problem sidelined him again between February and March. A three-game suspension following his controversial pull of Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair further limited his availability on his return.

Shaw’s situation is the most precarious of the four. United do not hold an extension option in his contract, meaning the 30-year-old left-back would leave on a free transfer next summer without a new deal. The club’s longest-serving player, Shaw joined from Southampton in 2014 for £27 million under Louis van Gaal and has made 325 appearances in Manchester. He was the only United player to start every Premier League match this season, completing the campaign without injury.

Bayindir, meanwhile, appears set to depart regardless of what United decide. The goalkeeper’s contract runs until 2027 and includes an extension option, but he is understood to be planning to leave before the end of the transfer window in search of regular first-team football.

Elsewhere, Harry Maguire and Tom Heaton were also heading into the final year of their respective contracts but have both recently signed new one-year extensions. Maguire’s renewed deal includes a further 12-month option.
