Bruno Fernandes has indicated he plans to stay at Manchester United, telling reporters at a Portugal national team press conference that leading the club back to Premier League glory would be a defining moment for any player.

The United captain, 31, has one year remaining on his contract, with the club holding an option to extend it by a further 12 months. European clubs can trigger a £56 million release clause in his deal, and Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal — who made a lucrative approach last summer that Fernandes rejected — remain a potential destination. Despite that, his latest comments suggest he is focused on the challenge at Old Trafford.

“Playing for Manchester United is always a special moment for everyone,” Fernandes said. “At the same time, it brings a lot of responsibility with it. I don’t think anyone comes to Manchester United thinking that we won’t have the responsibility to win again, to be at the top of the Premier League, at the top of European football.”

He added: “I think everyone always believes that we can be the ones who are going to do this, the ones who are going to turn the page, the ones who are going to make it possible for United to fight on all fronts. And I think that has to be special for us players, to realise that we can be the main protagonists of this change of history for United to win again.”

The comments follow a public show of support from United CEO Omar Berrada, who confirmed the club’s desire to retain their captain. “We’d like him to stay, of course we do,” Berrada said. “He’s had a great season on the pitch but more importantly he’s shown to everybody that he is a great leader. People don’t see what he does outside of the pitch. He understands the values of the club really well and I think we’ve seen him help a lot of the younger signings.”

Fernandes had a complicated winter after suggesting in December that the club had encouraged him to join Al-Hilal — a claim that appeared to contradict statements made by manager Ruben Amorim and the club hierarchy, who had both publicly backed him to stay. He subsequently clarified the situation in October, saying the club had aligned with Amorim’s wish for him to remain.

Despite the turbulence, Fernandes has enjoyed one of his most decorated individual seasons, collecting several personal awards. Former United captain Michael Carrick also recently reiterated the importance of keeping him, saying he had “no reason to think otherwise” when asked whether Fernandes would be at the club next season.
