Manchester United are preparing an opening bid for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, though the club is unwilling to meet the Hammers’ £80 million asking price for the 21-year-old Portugal international.

Fernandes, who joined West Ham for £38 million in the summer of 2025 and impressed throughout the most recent campaign, has reportedly identified United as his preferred destination and is eager for Champions League football. That desire, United believe, could give them leverage in negotiations — a dynamic that echoes last summer’s Alexander Isak saga between Newcastle and Liverpool, where the player’s determination to move ultimately forced a reluctant seller’s hand.

West Ham’s relegation to the Championship significantly complicates their position. The club faces Financial Fair Play pressure and may have little choice but to sell, even at a price below their valuation. Fernandes himself has previous experience of leaving a relegated club, having departed Southampton last season after their drop from the top flight.

United manager Michael Carrick is understood to view Fernandes as a player of considerable potential but limited proven experience at the highest level — a distinction that shapes the club’s reluctance to commit to the full £80 million fee. Carrick’s priority this summer is adding ready-made quality to a squad preparing for a return to European competition after United’s third-place Premier League finish last season.

The competition for Fernandes is formidable. Premier League champions Arsenal, Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid are all reported to be monitoring the midfielder, giving West Ham every incentive to drive up the price. The Hammers are expected to use that interest to spark a bidding war.

United are nonetheless expected to submit a formal offer this week, with personal terms not considered an obstacle. Whether West Ham accept a figure significantly below £80 million — or hold out for a rival club to meet their valuation — will determine whether Fernandes makes the move to Old Trafford.
