Fenerbahce agree personal terms with Greenwood, triggering potential £19m United windfall
Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi has announced a four-year personal terms agreement with Mason Greenwood, potentially activating Manchester United's 40 per cent sell-on clause from his £26m move to Marseille in 2024.
Fenerbahce have agreed personal terms with Mason Greenwood on a four-year deal, according to the club’s presidential candidate Hakan Safi — a development that could earn Manchester United around £19 million through a sell-on clause built into his original transfer.
Greenwood, 24, joined Marseille from Old Trafford in 2024 for £26 million, with United retaining a 40 per cent sell-on clause on any future sale. Marseille are reported to be seeking approximately £47.5 million for the forward, which would trigger a windfall of roughly £19 million for the Premier League club.
“We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood,” Safi said. “He has proven himself at the highest level of European football. He has agreed to join Fenerbahçe during the most valuable and productive years of his career. I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise.”
While personal terms are reportedly in place, Fenerbahce still need to reach a transfer fee agreement with Marseille before any deal is finalised.
Greenwood enjoyed a productive debut season in Ligue 1, scoring 16 goals and registering seven assists in 32 appearances. His form attracted interest from several major European clubs, with Roma, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus all linked ahead of the summer window. Marseille’s failure to qualify for the Champions League is understood to be a key factor in his expected departure.
Marseille sporting director Gregory Lorenzi acknowledged the situation in an interview with L’Equipe, saying: “He is one of the players that we are really thinking about with regard to their future. If an opportunity presents itself, naturally, we will think about it. But there is the club’s position, that of the player. It is also up to us to manage internally to find the best possible solution for all parties.”
United will be monitoring developments closely, with the sell-on clause representing a significant potential return on a transfer that was itself contentious at the time of completion.
