Felix Zwayer, referee with a match-fixing past, to officiate USA vs Australia at World Cup 2026
German official Felix Zwayer, who received a six-month ban in 2005 after the Robert Hoyzer match-fixing scandal, will referee the USA's second Group D game against Australia on Friday, June 19 in Seattle — a win for either side guarantees a place in the knockout stage.
German referee Felix Zwayer will take charge of the United States’ second 2026 FIFA World Cup group-stage match against Australia on Friday, June 19 in Seattle, with a place in the knockout round on the line for the winner.
Zwayer is one of UEFA’s most experienced officials and currently holds the organisation’s elite referee status. He has been a FIFA-listed referee for more than a decade and has worked some of the highest-profile matches in international football. Friday’s assignment will, however, mark his first World Cup appearance as the lead referee — he previously served as a Video Assistant Referee at the 2018 tournament in Russia.
The appointment is not without controversy. Zwayer’s career has been shadowed by a match-fixing scandal that shook German football in 2005. The affair centred on referee Robert Hoyzer, who admitted to accepting bribes to manipulate results. Reports at the time indicated that Zwayer assisted Hoyzer in one match and allegedly accepted a payment of 300 euros in connection with the scheme. He was handed a six-month suspension.
The episode resurfaced in December 2021 after a contentious Bundesliga clash between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Following a controversial defeat, then-Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham publicly called out Zwayer’s history. “You give a referee that has match-fixed before the biggest game in Germany, what do you expect?” Bellingham said in the aftermath.
The stakes on Friday are significant. The USA arrive in Seattle on the back of a dominant 4-1 opening victory over Paraguay. A second straight win would secure their progression to the round of 16, and if Paraguay simultaneously beat or draw with Türkiye, the United States would also clinch Group D outright.
