Felix Nmecha emerges as Manchester United's midfield alternative if Fernandes deal collapses
Manchester United are monitoring Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha as a contingency option after Tottenham moved to the front of the queue for primary target Mateus Fernandes, reportedly willing to meet his £85m asking price.
Manchester United are weighing up a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha as a fallback option in their search for a Casemiro replacement, with Tottenham threatening to hijack their pursuit of first-choice target Mateus Fernandes.
United identified Fernandes as a priority after West Ham’s relegation, but Spurs have since entered the race and are reportedly prepared to meet the £85m asking price. United remain in contention, and the Portuguese midfielder’s personal preference is expected to be the deciding factor, but the club appear to be drawing up alternatives.
Nmecha has caught the eye at the World Cup this summer, starting both of Germany’s group-stage games. He scored and assisted in the win over Curacao before adding another assist against the Ivory Coast, prompting strong praise from pundits. Gary Neville said after the Ivory Coast game: “The more he plays like he did the other night, the more expensive he’ll get. He looked outstanding. It looked like he had absolutely everything.” Ian Wright added: “He breaks lines, he gets into the box, he can play as a No.8 or No.10, you can see he can finish — he’s got everything.”
Nmecha spent much of last season operating as a defensive midfielder for Dortmund, but his performances in the Bundesliga and Champions League had already established him as one of the more complete midfielders in Germany before his World Cup displays.
The appeal for United extends beyond his on-pitch qualities. Under Premier League squad rules, clubs must include at least eight homegrown players in a 25-man squad, and Nmecha qualifies under that definition — a factor that would give him a practical advantage over non-homegrown alternatives.
United’s midfield search began with Elliot Anderson as the priority target, but Nottingham Forest’s valuation made that deal unworkable. Fernandes emerged as the next option, with data from last season showing he won more tackles and made more accurate switches of play than Anderson, while remaining competitive across other key metrics.
Should Fernandes ultimately choose Tottenham, Nmecha’s combination of defensive solidity, attacking output, and homegrown status gives United’s recruitment team a credible alternative to revisit.
