FA chief defends Tuchel contract extension, confirms performance clauses ahead of World Cup
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has explained why England extended Thomas Tuchel's contract until 2028 weeks before the World Cup, insisting the FA had not "moved the goalposts" and confirming performance clauses are written into the new deal.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has defended the Football Association’s decision to hand Thomas Tuchel a contract extension until 2028, just weeks before the Germany-born coach leads England into the 2026 World Cup this summer — and confirmed that performance clauses are embedded in the new agreement.
Tuchel was originally appointed on what was widely understood to be a win-or-bust basis for the tournament, making the early renewal a subject of scrutiny. Bullingham pushed back on that characterisation, arguing the extension was a forward-looking decision tied to England’s hosting of Euro 2028 rather than a revision of expectations for this summer.
“I don’t think we have moved the goalposts,” Bullingham said. “We appointed him to try and do as well as we can in this tournament, and we’ve appointed him for that tournament to see how well we can do. You never really want that hanging over you when you go into a tournament, because anyone in any walk of life on a fixed-term contract starts thinking about their future.”
Bullingham was effusive about Tuchel’s adaptation to international management, a transition that has historically tripped up experienced club coaches. “He’s adapted very, very well. It is a different flow, a different rhythm. He’s done it brilliantly,” the FA chief said, adding that Tuchel’s ability to command the camp and connect with players had been a standout quality.
“The energy and charisma he brings is amazing. He absolutely owns the room and owns the camp and he’s brilliant at connecting with everyone,” Bullingham said.
On the subject of performance clauses, Bullingham acknowledged their existence without disclosing specifics. “There are performance clauses in every single contract with the FA. I’m not going to go into any detail on what they are,” he said. “The reality is we’re really confident he’s going to be our coach in 2028.”
England’s hosting of Euro 2028 was cited as a central reason for securing Tuchel’s future now rather than waiting for a World Cup verdict. Bullingham framed the decision as pragmatic: with a major home tournament on the horizon, the FA did not want to enter a managerial search in the middle of a cycle. “It’s a very important home tournament for us. We wanted the best chance to do as well as we can, and feel we’ve got a really good manager — so why not extend it?”
