Evra claims he would have silenced Yamal in his prime, citing Ronaldo and Messi battles as proof

Patrice Evra insists he would have kept Lamine Yamal quiet at his peak, pointing to his defensive record against Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as evidence. Yamal, 18, is preparing for his first World Cup with Spain despite recovering from a hamstring injury.

Patrice Evra has declared he would have “eaten alive” Lamine Yamal in a one-on-one duel during his playing peak, telling the Barcelona teenager to ask Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi what it was like to face him.

Speaking to ESPN, the former Manchester United and France left-back was asked for his assessment of Yamal ahead of the 18-year-old’s first World Cup with Spain. Evra was characteristically blunt. “I’m sorry Lamine, I love you very much, I like you a lot, you are a crack in one-vs-one situations, but in my prime I would have eaten you alive,” he said. “Ask Cristiano Ronaldo, ask Messi, ask other players when they faced me. I am not a good friend.”

The claim carries a notable caveat: Evra faced Barcelona in three Champions League finals — losing all three, twice with Manchester United and once with Juventus — with Messi proving decisive on each occasion. Yet the Frenchman’s broader defensive record across a 20-year career, during which he also went up against Carlos Tevez, Steven Gerrard, Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard, underpins his confidence.

Evra spent eight and a half years at Old Trafford, making 379 appearances, scoring 10 goals and contributing 30 assists. Six of those seasons were alongside Ronaldo. He departed with 14 trophies, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Widely regarded as one of the finest left-backs of his generation, Evra captained both United and the French national team, and is remembered for combining defensive resilience with natural leadership.

Yamal, meanwhile, arrives at the World Cup as one of football’s most coveted young talents but is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and is expected to miss Spain’s opening group fixtures against Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. Luis de la Fuente’s side will be hoping their star winger recovers in time for the knockout rounds.
