Evra claims he would have 'eaten Yamal alive' and dares doubters to ask Ronaldo
Patrice Evra insists he would have neutralised Lamine Yamal at his peak, citing his duels with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as proof of his ability to handle the world's elite attackers.
Patrice Evra has declared he would have shut down Lamine Yamal with ease during his prime, invoking his battles against Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the clearest evidence of his credentials against elite wingers.
Speaking to ESPN, the former Manchester United and France left-back was unequivocal in his self-assessment. “I’m sorry Lamine, I love you very much, I like you a lot, you are a crack in one-vs-one situations, but in my prime I would have eaten you alive,” Evra said. “Ask Cristiano Ronaldo, ask Messi, ask other players when they faced me. I am not a good friend.”
The 45-year-old spent eight and a half years at Old Trafford, making 379 appearances and winning 14 trophies — including five Premier League titles and the Champions League. Six of those years were spent alongside Ronaldo, giving Evra daily exposure to one of the most demanding wide attackers of any generation. Over his 20-year career he also faced the likes of Carlos Tevez, Steven Gerrard, Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard.
Evra’s record against Messi, however, tells a more complicated story. He faced Barcelona in three Champions League finals — twice with United and once with Juventus — and lost all three, with Messi proving decisive on each occasion.
Yamal, 18, has risen rapidly to become one of the most coveted young players in world football. The Barcelona and Spain winger is currently recovering from a hamstring injury and is expected to miss Spain’s opening group fixtures at the World Cup, where Luis de la Fuente’s side face Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. Evra’s comments come as the teenager prepares for what would be his first World Cup appearance.
Despite the admiration Evra expressed for Yamal’s ability in one-on-one situations, the Frenchman left no doubt about where he believed the contest would have ended.
