Everton lead the race for Middlesbrough's Hackney ahead of United and Spurs
Everton have reportedly moved to the front of the queue for Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, leapfrogging Manchester United and Tottenham in the race for the 23-year-old Championship Player of the Season, according to The Athletic.
Everton have emerged as the surprise frontrunners to sign Middlesbrough captain Hayden Hackney this summer, with The Athletic reporting that the Toffees have stolen a march on Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for the 23-year-old midfielder.
Hackney’s stock has risen sharply over the past year, culminating in him being named Championship Player of the Season. That recognition triggered widespread Premier League interest, with Tottenham and Crystal Palace both credited with long-standing scouting missions, while Manchester United manager Michael Carrick was widely expected to be the most formidable obstacle in any rival club’s pursuit.
Carrick’s connection to Hackney runs deep. The United boss handed the midfielder a central role during his time in charge at Middlesbrough, overseeing his development across 104 senior appearances. Footballing circles had broadly anticipated that Hackney would be receptive to a reunion with his former mentor at Old Trafford.
However, Everton’s decisive intervention has reshaped the picture. By reportedly offering Hackney a guaranteed, central role in their Premier League midfield, the Merseysiders appear to have repositioned themselves as the leading candidate for his signature.
The timing works in Everton’s favour. Middlesbrough’s promotion hopes ended with a defeat to Hull City in the Championship play-off final, making Hackney’s departure this summer a near certainty. With the midfielder entering the final 12 months of his contract, Boro’s hierarchy will be aware that this window represents their last realistic chance to command a meaningful transfer fee.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are juggling broader squad-rebuilding priorities, while Spurs continue to assess their options — leaving Everton, preparing for their first season at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, with a potential edge in negotiations.
