Eriksen collapses in friendly match but reassures after night under observation
Christian Eriksen suffered a medical episode in the 65th minute of Denmark's friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, five years after his cardiac arrest at Euro 2021. Hospitalized in Odense, the 34-year-old midfielder was cleared by Denmark's team doctor.
Christian Eriksen was out of danger after collapsing on the pitch during the friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine on Sunday, in the 65th minute of play. The 34-year-old midfielder briefly lost consciousness before regaining his senses and walking to the ambulance that took him to Odense University Hospital for further examination.
The incident comes five years after the cardiac arrest that struck Eriksen during a Euro 2021 group match against Finland. Since that episode, the player has been fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), which did not prevent acute concern from gripping the stadium at the moment of his collapse.
The following morning, Denmark’s team doctor, Morten Boesen, delivered a reassuring update in an official statement. “I spoke to Christian this morning and he is doing well. He is with his family and in good spirits. We expect him to be discharged from hospital soon and able to return home,” he said.
Eriksen had achieved one of the most remarkable comebacks in recent European football: sidelined for nearly a year after his cardiac arrest, he returned to competition with Brentford before joining Manchester United, then Wolfsburg. This season, he has already earned six caps with Denmark, although the Scandinavian side failed to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
