Enzo Fernandez joins Manchester City for €145m, new Premier League record

Manchester City have signed Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for €145.9 million, making the Argentine midfielder the most expensive recruit in Premier League history. The transaction was finalized on the last day of the summer transfer window, confirmed by journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The 2022 World Cup winner, aged 25, surpasses Alexander Isak, who was bought by Liverpool for €145 million the previous season. This is not the first time Enzo Fernandez has set this record: in January 2023, his transfer from Benfica to Chelsea for €121 million had already earned him this distinction.

This move is part of a massive summer transfer window for the Etihad Stadium club, now managed by Enzo Maresca. Manchester City spent approximately €550 million this summer, with Elliot Anderson (€135m), Ayyoub Bouaddi (€95m) and Iliman Ndiaye (€75m) among the other signings. The club offset part of these expenses through significant sales, including Savinho (€87m), Tijjani Reijnders (€61m), Rodri (€60m), Nico Gonzalez (€56m) and James Trafford (€46m), totalling over €300 million in revenue.

Fernandez, who had himself requested to leave Chelsea to join City, is now embarking on an ambitious project despite a net financial balance that remains heavily in deficit for this transfer window.
