England need more than a win to guarantee top spot in World Cup Group L
England sit top of Group L on four points after a goalless draw with Ghana in Boston, but a win over Panama on Saturday will not automatically secure first place. Ghana can still overtake them depending on goal difference.
England head into the final round of World Cup 2026 group fixtures in first place but with their fate only partially in their own hands, as goal difference could yet hand Group L top spot to Ghana.
Thomas Tuchel’s side sit level on four points with Ghana after Tuesday’s goalless draw in Boston, separated only by a single goal on goal difference. Croatia are third on three points following their win over Panama, while Panama prop up the group without a point.
If England win against Panama
Victory over Panama on Saturday would put England in a strong position, but it would not guarantee first place. Ghana could still finish above them if they beat Croatia by a sufficiently larger margin. As an illustration, if England win by one goal and Ghana beat Croatia by three, Ghana would end the group stage top on goal difference.
If England draw against Panama
A draw would secure England’s place in the Round of 32 and a top-two finish, but it would open the door for rivals to claim first. A Ghana win over Croatia in that scenario would be enough to send the Black Stars to the top of the group. England would also need to keep an eye on Croatia: if Panama hold England and Croatia beat Ghana, Croatia would leapfrog England into first place.
If England lose to Panama
Defeat would end any realistic hope of topping Group L. The best England could then expect is a runners-up finish. A heavier loss combined with a Croatia victory over Ghana could, in a worst-case scenario, drag England into third place — a position that would leave their progression to the Round of 32 far from guaranteed, depending on how their goal difference compares to Ghana’s at the final whistle.
