England beat Ukraine 3-0 but fall short of automatic World Cup qualification

The Lionesses responded to Friday's 4-0 thrashing by Spain with a professional 3-0 win over Ukraine at Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium, but Spain's simultaneous victory over Iceland sealed Group A3 and condemned England to the play-offs for a place at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.

England finished second in World Cup qualifying Group A3 despite a 3-0 win over Ukraine at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Tuesday, with Spain’s victory over Iceland the same evening confirming that Sarina Wiegman’s side will need to navigate the play-offs to reach the 2027 finals in Brazil.

The result offered some consolation after Friday’s 4-0 defeat to Spain, and the Lionesses delivered the professional response Wiegman demanded, but automatic qualification was ultimately beyond their reach.

Jess Carter opened the scoring in the 14th minute, heading home a precise Lauren James delivery to reward a dominant opening spell that had already seen James rattle the woodwork with a speculative effort from the corner of the box. Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo had also gone close before Carter’s breakthrough.

Georgia Stanway doubled the lead eight minutes before half-time, sliding into an empty net after Russo cleverly laid off Keira Walsh’s incisive pass. England’s control was near-total in the first half, with 26,065 fans at Everton’s stadium watching Ukraine barely escape their own half.

Ukraine showed more spirit after the break, though Hannah Hampton had little to trouble her beyond a deflected Tanya Boychuk effort in the first half. England’s third arrived with a quarter of the game remaining when Beth Mead curled a free-kick from the edge of the box beyond a static Kateryna Boklach — the 40th international goal of Mead’s career. It completed a sixth defeat from six qualifying games for Ukraine.

The play-off route now stands between England and a place at the 2027 World Cup, a significant step down from the automatic berth the European champions would have secured had they topped the group.
