Endrick defends Ancelotti after substitute role at 2026 World Cup
Benched during Brazil's 1-1 draw with Morocco on June 14 in the opening match of Group C at the 2026 World Cup, 19-year-old Endrick spoke out to support Carlo Ancelotti, who faced a wave of criticism on social media.
Endrick chose to defend Carlo Ancelotti rather than fuel the controversy. While Brazil’s head coach faced criticism following the 1-1 draw against Morocco on June 14 in the opening match of Group C at the 2026 World Cup, the 19-year-old striker spoke out to refocus the debate.
The complaint from supporters is clear: Ancelotti opted to start Igor Thiago up front rather than Endrick. The Brentford striker delivered a disappointing performance — two shots attempted, only one on target, no successful dribbles in 62 minutes — sparking a wave of memes and humorous videos unflattering to the 67-year-old Italian coach.
“Ancelotti, I spent a year with him at Real Madrid. He knows what I do when I come on the pitch: I give everything for the team,” Endrick told CazéTV. The player insisted he is not affected by his substitute status. “He’s a great coach, he has his head on straight. He’s not going to do what’s best for Endrick or for the supporters, he’s going to do what’s best for the team.”
Far from any bitterness, the former Olympique Lyonnais player even thanked the internet users behind the memes made in his honor. “The coach knows very well that I can help the team. I’m very touched by what the supporters are doing for me,” he added.
Brazil, forced to react after this opening stumble, must quickly find its footing in Group C to avoid jeopardizing its path to the knockout stages.
