El Salvador's Ivan Barton to referee Switzerland vs Colombia World Cup quarter-final decider
Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton will take charge of the Switzerland vs Colombia Round of 16 clash at the 2026 World Cup, with the winner advancing to face either Egypt or Argentina in the quarter-finals.
Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton has been appointed to officiate Switzerland vs Colombia, the final Round of 16 match at the 2026 World Cup, with a quarter-final place against either Egypt or defending champions Argentina at stake.
The 35-year-old is no stranger to the tournament’s biggest stages. This will be his third match of the current World Cup, having previously overseen group-stage fixtures between Turkey and Paraguay, and Japan and Sweden. It also marks his second World Cup overall, after taking charge of three matches at Qatar 2022 — including England’s Round of 16 tie against Senegal.
Barton attracted widespread attention during the Turkey vs Paraguay match after his theatrically animated red-card announcement for Miguel Almiron, following a VAR review. The dismissal was notable for another reason: Barton became the first referee in World Cup history to send off a player for covering their mouth with their hand.
He will be assisted on the pitch by fellow Salvadorans David Moran and Antonio Pupiro, while Katia Itzel Garcia and Sandra Ramirez of Mexico will serve as fourth official and reserve assistant referee respectively.
Barton’s disciplinary record offers a mixed picture heading into the fixture. Across three matches at Qatar 2022, he produced just three yellow cards in total — a notably restrained tally. His domestic record in El Salvador tells a different story: in 21 league matches across 2025 and 2026, he issued 12 red cards and 113 yellows. At this summer’s tournament, however, he has returned to a more measured approach, showing five yellows and one red across his two games so far.
