Dorgu hamstring scare leaves Manchester United dangerously short at left-back

Manchester United face a potential left-back crisis after Patrick Dorgu was forced off with a hamstring injury 30 minutes into Denmark’s clash with Wales, prompting the club to recall the 21-year-old for assessment ahead of the Premier League’s return.

The timing is particularly troubling for manager Michael Carrick because Dorgu has been covering for Luke Shaw, who returned from a three-game absence to feature against Fulham before the international break but cannot be relied upon to start every fixture in a congested schedule. If Dorgu is ruled out for any significant period, Carrick’s options narrow sharply to Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, or academy product Harry Amass.

The situation is compounded by uncertainty over Mazraoui, who came off in the 69th minute of Morocco’s game against Lesotho on Tuesday. Whether that substitution was precautionary or injury-related remains unclear, but the prospect of losing both Dorgu and Mazraoui simultaneously would leave United critically exposed on the left flank.

Dorgu’s previous hamstring problem, sustained in January, kept him sidelined for three months. A recurrence of anything close to that duration would be a serious blow to a squad that was already considered light in that position going into the season.

The current predicament has reignited debate about United’s decision not to sign a specialist left-back in the summer window. The club identified Lewis Hall as their primary target, but Newcastle were unwilling to sell, and Hall has since signed a contract extension at St James’ Park until 2031, making any future pursuit considerably more expensive — an educated estimate of his value over the summer was around £70 million.

With Hall unavailable, United opted against pursuing a cheaper alternative, reportedly unconvinced by options such as Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas, who had a £15 million release clause. The club’s stance was that no suitable candidate existed in the market, but the current injury situation suggests that calculation may prove costly.

Shaw’s fitness record made it entirely foreseeable that the squad would be stretched if Dorgu also picked up a problem. The full extent of the Denmark international’s latest injury will become clearer once United’s medical staff complete their assessment.
