Cristiano Ronaldo broke with the Portuguese national team on Wednesday in Copenhagen, on the eve of the match against Denmark. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner left the Seleçao hotel before his teammates even returned to training, suitcase in hand, in front of photographers and supporters.

Minutes after leaving the Parken Stadium, CR7 made the split official on Instagram: “After the national team manager’s press conference, and following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team camp. In due course, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that motivated my departure.” According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, this decision is “definitive” and “irrevocable”.

The crisis had erupted earlier in the day during the pre-match press conference. Jorge Jesus, appointed manager after the 2026 World Cup to replace Roberto Martínez, announced bluntly that Ronaldo would not start against Denmark. A strong signal, which followed Sunday’s match against Norway (2-1 victory), in which the captain remained on the bench without playing.

When asked about Ronaldo’s absence when greeting supporters in Norway, Jesus had displayed superficial understanding before reasserting his authority: “No player or president will be able to change the way I think about football.” This statement, according to O Jogo, was the final straw. Refusing both a substitute role and his manager’s training instructions, Ronaldo chose to leave.

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the departure in a terse statement, assuring that the Seleçao would continue its camp “with the 24 remaining players”, fully focused on the trip to Denmark and then hosting Norway on Sunday in Porto.

Author of 146 goals in 234 international caps, Cristiano Ronaldo thus closes the curtain on more than two decades in the national team shirt, in a dressing room in open crisis.
