Benzema and Mahrez on Getafe's radar, but their salaries block any progress
Struggling in La Liga, Getafe is scouting the free-agent market for the January transfer window. Karim Benzema and Riyad Mahrez are on the Madrid club's list, but their salary demands make these options highly unlikely.
Getafe studied the profiles of Karim Benzema and Riyad Mahrez for the January transfer window, according to Spanish newspaper AS. The two former internationals, without a club since the summer, feature on a list of free agents reviewed by the Madrid club’s management during the international break.
José Bordalás’s side are having a difficult start to the season in La Liga. The opening seven matchdays have exposed the limitations of a squad weakened by injuries and suspensions, prompting the board to plan reinforcements as early as January. Several names are circulating: Jadon Sancho, Raphaël Guerreiro, Dani Carvajal and Abdoulaye Doucouré are also mentioned.
Benzema terminated his contract with Al-Hilal on August 30, while Mahrez left Al-Ahli in July after three seasons in Saudi Arabia. On paper, their immediate availability fits Getafe’s needs. In reality, their financial demands make these two options very complicated for a club with limited resources.
Bordalás is primarily seeking players who are immediately operational, capable of integrating quickly into his system and accepting a role in rotation. La Liga experience and physical condition will be determining factors, with midfield and wings being the priority areas to strengthen. Benzema and Mahrez therefore appear more as profiles being examined than as genuine targets.
