Ederson undergoes medical as Manchester United target five summer signings
Manchester United are closing in on Atalanta midfielder Ederson in a £35m deal, with the Brazilian set to undergo a medical during the World Cup. The move is one of several transfers United hope to complete early in the summer window.
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson for an initial £35m, with the 26-year-old understood to be undergoing a medical while on World Cup duty with Brazil in the United States.
ESPN reported that an agreement has been reached to bring Ederson to Old Trafford, with Corriere dello Sport adding that the medical is already under way. His arrival could be confirmed as early as this week, making him the first signing of United’s summer rebuild under manager Michael Carrick.
Ederson fills a pressing need in central midfield following the confirmed departure of Casemiro, whose contract expires on June 30 alongside those of Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho. The Brazilian was called up to Brazil’s World Cup squad as a late replacement for the injured Wesley, and has been playing backup to Casemiro in the national team setup — a dynamic that will now be reversed at club level.
Atletico Madrid had been considered frontrunners for Ederson’s signature, but United moved decisively to revive their long-standing interest and secure the deal.
Ederson is expected to be one of at least two new central midfielders Carrick brings in this summer. The relatively modest fee could help free up funds for a second addition in that area. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a target, with the Hammers valuing the 21-year-old Portugal international at up to £85m following his standout performances during their relegation battle. West Ham were relegated on the final day of the 2025/26 season, and while the club remain hopeful of recouping a significant fee, United’s opening bid is expected to fall well short of that asking price.
United finished third in the Premier League last season, securing a return to the Champions League — a competition that will place additional demands on the squad and has accelerated the club’s transfer activity. Carrick’s side will need greater depth across the squad to cope with the expanded fixture list, and the early movement on Ederson suggests the club intends to move quickly once the summer window officially opens.
