Ederson move 'almost all sorted' as Spurs hijack United's Mateus Fernandes pursuit
Manchester United's first signing of the Michael Carrick era appears imminent after Atalanta midfielder Ederson confirmed his £35m move is 'practically almost all sorted', while Tottenham have emerged as serious rivals for primary midfield target Mateus Fernandes.
Manchester United are closing in on their first signing under Michael Carrick after Atalanta midfielder Ederson declared his move to Old Trafford is ‘practically almost all sorted’, with the club having agreed an initial €40.5m (£35m) fee, plus €4.5m (£3.8m) in add-ons for the 26-year-old.
Speaking at the World Cup, Ederson told Tuttosport: “It’s practically almost all sorted. I have to make the most of this moment. I am here and it is a wonderful thing, something you must always live to the fullest.” The Brazilian is expected to become Carrick’s first recruit ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
However, United’s pursuit of a second midfielder has hit a significant obstacle. Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as serious contenders for Mateus Fernandes, with reports suggesting Spurs are close to agreeing personal terms with the 21-year-old. United had previously been considered favourites for the Portugal international, with West Ham United holding firm on an £80m asking price. Discussions between Fernandes and Spurs are understood to have advanced positively over the weekend.
United have also been linked with Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, and the Magpies are reportedly willing to sell the Italian midfielder this summer provided their valuation is met.
Meanwhile, former United striker Louis Saha has urged the club not to sell Marcus Rashford to Arsenal, despite reports suggesting the forward could leave Old Trafford this summer. Rashford has been mentioned as a possible target for the reigning Premier League champions, but Saha drew a sharp parallel with Robin van Persie’s move from Arsenal to United in 2012.
“For me, selling Marcus Rashford to Arsenal is a complete no-go,” Saha said. “I wouldn’t give any strength to the reigning Premier League champion. Look at Robin van Persie coming to United and helping them win the league. There’s no good in those kinds of deals for the selling club.”
Saha also pointed to Rashford’s impact at Barcelona last season, where the forward contributed to their La Liga title. “I consider Rashford a real danger for anyone who wants to compete in the league,” he added. “I think that giving a discount on assets to your rival for the Premier League is stupidity.”
