DR Congo supporters blocked from entering United States due to Ebola ahead of Portugal clash
Due to a resurgence of the Ebola epidemic, Congolese supporters have been denied entry to the United States. DR Congo faces Portugal on Wednesday in Houston for its return to the World Cup, 52 years after its last appearance.
DR Congo will play its opening match at the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday in Houston against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, without the vast majority of its supporters. American authorities refused entry to Congolese fans due to the resurgence of the Ebola epidemic in the country.
It is a tough blow for the Leopards, who are making their grand return to the world stage 52 years after their last appearance. Manager Sébastien Desabre did not hide his sadness at the pre-match press conference: “We were very touched and very sad that the majority of our supporters from the country who have followed us everywhere cannot travel. We will try to transmit good vibes from a distance by trying to give them pleasure on the pitch.”
Desabre had first recalled the strong bond built with the Congolese public over the years: “We have been with our supporters for three years now. Everywhere we go, we are supported by Congolese people.” A relationship built over time, brutally tested by health circumstances.
The Leopards will not be completely alone in the stands, however. The Congolese diaspora established in the United States will be present to support Cédric Bakambu and his teammates. “This is a real source of motivation,” the French manager said. “Of course, everyone is a bit disappointed, but this support remains an extra motivation for us to fight on the pitch.”
DR Congo approaches this opening clash in a particular emotional context, facing one of the most formidable teams in the tournament.
