Doué to start, Saliba fit: Deschamps settles on XI for Senegal clash
Two days before France face Senegal in the 2026 World Cup, Didier Deschamps has reportedly decided to start Désiré Doué on the left wing, while William Saliba has been declared fit to play.
Désiré Doué is expected to start for France in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday evening against Senegal in Group I. According to journalists present at Bentley University, Didier Deschamps has definitively made his choice during a closed-door session, confirming the PSG player in the attacking quartet alongside Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise.
The left wing position had been one of the main points of uncertainty in recent days. Bradley Barcola, Doué’s direct rival for the spot, had been studied for his pace and ability to attack in depth on the transition. But the former Lyon player, already spotted among the starters during the previous day’s team training, appears to have convinced the manager.
The two warm-up matches had not dispelled all doubts: France suffered a defeat to Côte d’Ivoire (2-1) before winning unconvincingly against Northern Ireland (3-1), leaving several questions open about the ideal lineup.
Other good news for the French staff: William Saliba has returned to team training and is declared fully operational. The Arsenal centre-back, who was still experiencing some discomfort, should take his place in defence against the Lions of Teranga. His presence represents a significant boost for a French defence that is approaching this World Cup with stated ambitions.
Kickoff for France-Senegal is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 p.m.
