Dorgu's wing form forces Manchester United to rethink their left-flank transfer strategy
Patrick Dorgu scored in three consecutive games to end the season, including a stunning strike at Arsenal, and his versatility now shapes which type of left-sided player Manchester United pursue this summer.
Patrick Dorgu ended the 2024/25 season on a remarkable run of form, scoring in three straight competitive appearances for Manchester United — against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Brighton — and his emergence as a genuine left-wing option is now directly influencing the club’s summer transfer planning.
United signed the 21-year-old Denmark international for £25 million to operate as a left wing-back in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, but it was in a more advanced left-wing role under interim manager Michael Carrick that Dorgu truly caught the eye. A hamstring injury interrupted his momentum, but he returned for the final day of the season and scored again, setting up a potential fourth consecutive scoring game when the new campaign begins.
His confidence has carried into international football too. Dorgu scored a composed goal for Denmark against Ukraine in a June friendly, once again operating from the left wing rather than the deeper wing-back position.
That versatility is now a key factor in United’s transfer window calculations. The club are monitoring players across two positions on the left flank — left-back and left-winger — but are expected to sign only one, with Dorgu’s ability to cover both roles reducing the urgency to address each separately.
Newcastle’s Lewis Hall is among the left-backs under consideration as potential competition for Luke Shaw. Should United move for a full-back, Dorgu would likely continue to feature further forward. If, however, the club opt to bring in an attacking wide player, Dorgu would shift back to left-back duties, providing cover and competition for Shaw.
Left-wingers being monitored include West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye, and Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers.
Dorgu’s profile at his previous club Lecce underlines just how adaptable he is. He made 24 appearances at left-back and 14 higher up the same flank, while also featuring 11 times as a right-winger and three times at right-back. That range of experience suggests he could eventually become a right-side option at Old Trafford too, though for now the focus remains on the left.
