France defeated Senegal 3-1 in their World Cup opener, but victory nearly slipped away: a dull first half, a post rescue on a Nicolas Jackson shot, and a dressing room that needed shaking up.

Didier Deschamps raised his voice at halftime, and his players made no secret of it. “We needed the coach to get on us. It was a bit mental I think in that first half,” Bradley Barcola admitted after the match. William Saliba confirmed the substance of the message: “We weren’t good. We talked to each other, we said what we needed to do better. That’s what we did and that’s why we won.” The defender clarified that the manager had called for more composure on the ball, less rushing, while reminding them that early World Cup outings are rarely smooth for anyone.

But the speech wasn’t limited to words. Deschamps also made a decisive tactical adjustment: Michael Olise was repositioned centrally, pushing Ousmane Dembélé to the right wing. The change immediately bore fruit. It was Olise who delivered the incisive pass allowing Kylian Mbappé to open the scoring shortly after the hour mark. The France captain then doubled the lead, before Bradley Barcola scored the third goal. Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal in added time, but it had no bearing on the result.

Aurélien Tchouameni had warned before the match that “the first game in a competition is never very good.” The reality of the first half proved him right, but the collective response in the second half reassured about the runners-up’s ability to correct course during the tournament. Olise’s repositioning centrally, having been omnipresent after the break, could now become a fixture in Deschamps’ setup for the rest of the competition.
