Canadian defender Derek Cornelius of Olympique de Marseille has been named the best defender on opening day of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup by FIFA, which has launched power rankings for this American edition inspired by rankings used in North American sports.

Despite conceding a goal as Canada faced Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cornelius dominated the defensive rankings thanks to impressive statistics: 17 balls recovered, 13 clearances, four blocks and eight aerial duels won. He finished ahead of two Bosnian players, Nicolas Katic and Tarik Muharemovic, both rated 7.1 out of 10, while Austrian Xaver Schlager rounded out the podium with 7.0, just ahead of American Tyler Adams.

In attack, Lionel Messi logically took the top spot thanks to his hat-trick against Algeria, with a rating of 8.1 out of 10. New Zealander Elijah Just (7.9, author of a brace against Iran) and Kylian Mbappé (7.5, two goals against Senegal) complete the podium, ahead of Swede Yasin Ayari (7.5) and Harry Kane (7.2).

In the creativity category, Iranian Ramin Rezaeian stood out with the best rating across all categories, 8.2 out of 10. Michael Olise follows at a distance with 7.4, ahead of Florian Wirtz (7.3), Kang-In Lee and Julio Enciso (7.3 as well).

These power rankings are among the most visible innovations of this World Cup hosted in the United States, alongside systematic cooling breaks established at each match, regardless of weather conditions.
