Demichelis and Gonzalez handed extensions despite relegation battles in La Liga
RCD Mallorca have retained Martin Demichelis until 2028 despite his side's relegation on the final weekend, while Espanyol have extended Manolo Gonzalez's contract until 2027 after a 19-game winless run. Getafe's Jose Bordalas, linked to both clubs, is expected to decide his future on Monday.
RCD Mallorca have handed Martin Demichelis a new contract until 2028, keeping faith with the Argentine coach despite his side’s relegation from La Liga on the final day of the 2025-26 season. Espanyol have made a similar call, extending manager Manolo Gonzalez until 2027 after a turbulent campaign that included a 19-game winless run.
Mallorca’s decision to retain Demichelis is a notable show of loyalty. The former Manchester City defender had expressed a desire to stay at the club even if they went down, and despite a damaging run of three defeats from their final four games — against Levante, Alavés and Getafe — the club have backed him to lead their return to the top flight.
At Espanyol, Gonzalez’s position appeared precarious after that extended run without a win in 2026, but back-to-back victories in their final three matches secured survival and, ultimately, his future. The arrival of Monchi as General Sporting Director had fuelled speculation that a managerial change was imminent, but the club opted to keep Gonzalez, who was visibly moved by the support he received from players and supporters in the closing weeks of the season.
Elsewhere in the managerial picture, Rayo Vallecano confirmed that Iñigo Pérez will depart when his contract expires this summer, while Eder Sarabia resigned from Elche despite keeping the club up. Michel Sánchez, who left relegated Girona after failing to beat Elche on the final day, is expected to take charge at Ajax.
One figure whose future remains unresolved is Getafe manager Jose Bordalas. Out of contract this summer, he had been linked with both Espanyol and Sevilla, but neither option appears likely to materialise. The Espanyol role will not be offered to him, and Sergio Ramos’ takeover talks at Sevilla breaking down has complicated that avenue. According to Diario AS, Bordalas is set to make a decision on Monday, with a renewal at Getafe — whom he guided to the Conference League this season — still a possibility.
