Delgado vows to 'put Silva down like a dog' as Noche UFC 4 main event heats up

Jose Delgado has set the tone for his Noche UFC 4 main event against Jean Silva with a blunt message: the Brazilian’s bark will be silenced on September 12 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

Delgado (12-2) steps in as a late replacement after Yair Rodriguez withdrew from his scheduled bout with Silva (17-3) due to injury. Far from treating the opportunity as a favour, Delgado has embraced it aggressively, dismissing Silva’s well-known eccentric persona as a front.

“It is an illusion for him, man… He’s a coward,” Delgado told Ariel Helwani. “He needs that mask to make himself feel good. It’s a disguise, and it’s a farce. I don’t respect it. I will put him down like a dog. [Before] you just let the dog bark.”

Silva is known for his animated, dog-like antics — a personality trait Delgado clearly has no patience for. The 12-2 fighter sees the fight as more than a statement win; he believes it opens the door to featherweight title contention.

“I expect violence. I expect to break this guy,” Delgado said. “I expect a freaking stunner of a KO… If Jean Silva took out Yair Rodriguez, he’d be fighting for the title after Volk and Movsar fight. Why wouldn’t I steal that spotlight? Why wouldn’t I steal that opportunity?”

The title picture Delgado is eyeing centres on UFC 333, where reigning featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski defends against unbeaten challenger Movsar Evloev. A high-profile win over Silva would put Delgado firmly in the conversation for whoever emerges from that contest.

Delgado enters the fight 4-1 in the UFC, with his two most recent victories coming against Andre Fili and Austin Bashi. Silva, meanwhile, carries a 6-1 UFC record and has finished five of those six opponents by knockout. His sole defeat came against two-time title challenger Diego Lopes.

With both fighters carrying genuine finishing power and Delgado now adding a personal edge to proceedings, the Noche UFC 4 headliner has the makings of a volatile and consequential featherweight clash.
