Cape Verde will face reigning world champions Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 32 on July 3 at Miami Stadium, after the debutants finished second in Group H with three points from three matches.

Argentina secured top spot in Group J with back-to-back wins in their opening two fixtures, locking in their last-16 place before their final group stage game. Cape Verde, meanwhile, edged through as Group H runners-up — a result that carried +165 odds of happening entering the tournament.

The Islanders’ campaign has already produced one of the tournament’s early talking points. Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha kept a clean sheet against Spain in Cape Verde’s World Cup opener, making seven saves in a result that made him an overnight sensation. A 2-2 draw with Uruguay in their second match then secured the points needed to advance.

On paper, Cape Verde’s statistical standout is Ryan Mendes, the side’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player. But it is Vozinha who has captured the imagination heading into a tie that pits the tournament’s most celebrated debutants against the most decorated team in the field.

For Messi, Miami Stadium will be familiar territory. The July 3 fixture will be his fourth appearance at the venue, the most memorable of which was the 2024 Copa América final. Messi plays his club football for Inter Miami CF, though the MLS side’s home ground is Nu Stadium, also in Miami.

Cape Verde’s debut World Cup run has already exceeded expectations. A knockout-round meeting with Argentina — and Messi — is the ultimate test of how far this story can go.
