Davies signs new Spurs deal despite ankle surgery as £30m Bissouma departs for free
Tottenham have handed Ben Davies a one-year contract extension despite the 33-year-old requiring two operations on a serious ankle injury sustained in January. Yves Bissouma, signed for £30m in 2022, is among 11 players leaving the club when their contracts expire this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Ben Davies will remain at the club for the 2026/27 season after signing a one-year contract extension, while Yves Bissouma is set to leave on a free transfer when his deal expires this month.
Davies, 33, had been facing the prospect of becoming a free agent after suffering a serious ankle injury during a 2-1 defeat to West Ham in mid-January. The Wales international required two operations and missed the final 22 matches of the season, having also been sidelined earlier in the campaign with a hamstring problem. He made just five appearances in total during 2025/26.
Despite the injury concerns, Spurs moved to retain the defender, who has made 363 appearances for the club since joining from Swansea City in 2014. Davies was part of the squad that lifted the Europa League last season and is regarded as a significant presence in the dressing room.
“Tottenham Hotspur really feels like home,” Davies said on the club’s official website. “It’s been a huge part of my football journey and I’m grateful for what the club has given me so far in my career. My heart’s on my sleeve for this club and I’ll give everything for it.”
Bissouma’s departure marks a more difficult end to his time in north London. The 29-year-old Mali international joined from Brighton for £30m in 2022 and made 111 appearances for Spurs, including a prominent role in the Europa League final victory over Manchester United. Despite flashes of quality, Tottenham have decided against offering him a new deal, allowing him to leave without a transfer fee.
Bissouma is one of 11 players departing the club at the end of their contracts, with Pele Arganese-McDermott, Tyrell Ashcroft, Leo Black, Dante Cassanova, Matthew Craig, Calum Logan, Jamel Beggs, Samal Bangura, Leon Myrtaj, and Elijah Upson also confirmed as leaving in Tottenham’s retained list announcement.
