Danny Simpson ends retirement to join Jonjo Shelvey's UAE project as player-coach
Former Leicester City title winner Danny Simpson has come out of retirement to join UAE Second Division side Arabian Falcons FC as a player-coach under manager Jonjo Shelvey, with the Dubai club also extending Ravel Morrison's contract ahead of a promotion push.
Danny Simpson, the right-back who played a key role in Leicester City’s extraordinary 5,000/1 Premier League title win in 2016, has ended his retirement to join UAE Second Division club Arabian Falcons FC as a player-coach for the 2026/27 season.
The 39-year-old will combine on-pitch duties with a backroom role at the Dubai-based club, working under manager Jonjo Shelvey — the former England international who took charge for the final five games of last season after the Falcons narrowly missed out on promotion.
“The opportunity to join Jonjo and this exciting project was one I couldn’t turn down,” Simpson said. “I still have plenty to offer on the pitch. The club has a clear plan, and I want to play my part in delivering a successful promotion-winning campaign.”
Simpson arrives with a CV that also includes promotions with Newcastle United, Sunderland, and QPR, and Shelvey was quick to underline what the signing represents. “Danny is the ideal signing — a Premier League champion with vast experience, leadership, and a winning mentality,” the manager said. “This is the start of us building a team I firmly believe can win promotion this season.”
The Falcons have also confirmed a one-year contract extension for club captain Ravel Morrison, the former Manchester United midfielder who will anchor the midfield alongside co-owner and head of football operations Jason Puncheon.
“This signing sends a strong message about our ambition,” Puncheon said, pointing to the club’s stated goal of reaching the UAE First Division.
Off the pitch, Arabian Falcons have launched an academy — led by Shelvey, Simpson, Morrison, and Puncheon — designed to create a development pathway for youth players across the UAE. The club’s 2026/27 campaign will also be the subject of a behind-the-scenes documentary tracking the team throughout the season.
