Curacao wrote their name into World Cup history at the NRG Stadium in Houston, scoring their first-ever goal in the tournament during their Group Stage match against Germany at the 2026 World Cup. It is the Caribbean nation’s debut appearance at the finals, making the moment all the more remarkable.

With a population of just 155,000 — small enough to fit inside two World Cup stadiums — Curacao are one of the smallest nations ever to grace the tournament. Only one player in their squad, Tahith Chong, was actually born on the island itself.

Curacao is located in the southern Caribbean Sea, roughly 40 miles north of Venezuela and 50 miles southeast of Aruba. Like Aruba, it remains part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with Dutch listed as one of three official languages alongside English and Papiamentu. The island was originally colonised by Spain in 1499 before passing to Dutch control in the 1600s.

At just 171 square miles, Curacao is smaller in area than the city of Leeds, making it one of the most compact footballing nations on the planet. The island also contains Klein Curacao — literally “Little Curaçao” — a smaller, uninhabited landmass off its southeastern tip.

The origin of the name itself remains a matter of debate, though it is widely speculated to derive from the Spanish word corazón, meaning “heart”.

Curacao’s presence at a World Cup is the product of years of steady development within CONCACAF, and their debut on the grandest stage — against one of international football’s traditional powerhouses — has already delivered a moment their 155,000 citizens will not forget.
