Cunha plays down Brazil No.10 snub after Neymar's surprise World Cup return

Matheus Cunha had been expected to inherit Brazil's No.10 shirt for the 2026 World Cup, but Carlo Ancelotti's decision to select Neymar ended that prospect. The Manchester United forward, handed the No.9 instead, scored twice in a 3-0 win over Haiti after starting on the bench in the opener.

Matheus Cunha has brushed aside the disappointment of missing out on Brazil’s No.10 shirt at the World Cup, insisting he would “do anything” to represent his country regardless of the number on his back.

The Manchester United forward had been widely expected to inherit the iconic shirt for the tournament, on the assumption that Neymar — sidelined for three years after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament — would not be fit enough to feature. Carlo Ancelotti, however, selected the country’s all-time top scorer, who was duly handed the No.10, leaving Cunha to wear the No.9.

“I would do anything to be here, regardless of the shirt,” Cunha told TV Globo. “I try to see the glass half full — so many great players have worn this shirt and performed well. I’m just another one trying to make history by scoring goals.”

Cunha was named among the substitutes for Brazil’s opening group game against Morocco, a match that ended in a draw. He was promoted to the starting XI for the second fixture against Haiti and responded emphatically, scoring twice in a 3-0 victory.

“I think I’ve become tougher, more mature, and I’m trying to live in the moment,” he said after the Haiti win. “The dream of being here is huge. We haven’t achieved anything yet, but it’s good to feel like you’re in the World Cup and celebrating a victory.”

Ancelotti was satisfied with the improvement from his side. “It was what I expected — a game with fewer mistakes, more effectiveness in attack, more control in defence,” the Brazil head coach said. “We have improved, and we will improve in the next game.”

Cunha also reflected on a strong debut season at Old Trafford, crediting the club environment for helping him settle quickly. “From day one I felt comfortable and was very well received by the players, the staff, and the fans,” he said. “I managed to find the necessary peace of mind to give my best on the pitch, and that allowed me to have an excellent season.”

He pointed to United’s qualification for the Champions League as the standout collective achievement. “We have managed to get United back into the Champions League, and we hope to continue on this upward trajectory next season. We have a lot of confidence in our work.”
