Cucurella signs for Real Madrid on €60m deal after rejecting Barcelona to fulfil childhood dream
Marc Cucurella has joined Real Madrid from Chelsea on a six-year contract worth up to €60m, revealing he had 'no doubts' once Los Blancos entered the race — despite Barcelona and Atlético Madrid both holding advanced talks with the left-back.
Marc Cucurella has completed a move to Real Madrid from Chelsea, signing a six-year contract worth a reported €55m plus €5m in add-ons, after the Spanish club hijacked a deal that had been progressing with both Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. The 27-year-old left-back, speaking to El Mundo, said the decision was immediate once Real Madrid made their interest known.
“When the Madrid team came I didn’t think about it — I think it’s a unique opportunity,” Cucurella said. “Playing for Real Madrid is an honour and not many players can say it, so I had no doubts.” According to Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein, Real Madrid’s intervention accelerated a timeline that had previously favoured his former club Barcelona, where Cucurella came through the La Masia academy before leaving permanently in 2020.
The transfer is among the most significant early moves of José Mourinho’s new tenure as Real Madrid manager, with the Portuguese coach reportedly identifying Cucurella as a priority target. Cucurella will join the squad after Spain’s 2026 World Cup campaign concludes.
He framed the decision as one shared by his entire inner circle. “Both I and my environment, my family, were clear that it is an opportunity we could not refuse, and I am very happy with the decision we have made,” he said. Cucurella returns to La Liga after five seasons in England — the last four at Chelsea, where he made over 160 appearances and won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
The more sensitive thread in the interview was his message to Barcelona supporters, for whom a La Masia graduate joining Real Madrid carries an obvious symbolic weight. Cucurella’s response was measured rather than apologetic. “Life has different stages,” he said. “In this case I have had to make an important decision and I have no doubt — I think it is a big step for me.”
He also pointed to Real Madrid’s record in European competition — “the team with the most Champions Leagues in the world” — as part of his reasoning, though his connection to Barcelona was always complicated. He made just one competitive appearance for the Blaugrana first team before spending years on loan at Eibar and Getafe, eventually leaving for Brighton and then Chelsea without ever establishing himself at the Camp Nou.
