Cucurella seals £51.7m Real Madrid move as Chelsea eye five left-back replacements
Marc Cucurella has completed a £51.7 million transfer from Chelsea to Real Madrid, signing a six-year deal with the Spanish giants. Head coach Xabi Alonso is now weighing up replacements, with Valentin Barco and Lewis Hall among the options being considered.
Marc Cucurella has left Chelsea for Real Madrid in a £51.7 million deal, with the Spain international signing a six-year contract at the Bernabéu after four years at Stamford Bridge. The 27-year-old’s departure was confirmed on Monday morning, with the lure of Champions League football understood to have been the decisive factor in his decision.
The speed of the exit surprised many at the club. As recently as last week, Cucurella had spoken publicly about feeling “filled with confidence” following conversations with head coach Xabi Alonso during the international break with Spain. Despite those positive signals, interest from La Liga ultimately proved irresistible.
Cucurella had been one of Chelsea’s most consistent performers last season under both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, establishing himself as a key figure on the left side of the defence. His exit leaves Alonso with a notable gap to fill, with academy graduate Jorrel Hato considered the only natural in-house option at present. Hato’s recent emergence was cited as a contributing factor in the club’s decision to sanction the sale.
Chelsea are now said to be assessing potential recruits, with several names in the frame. Valentin Barco, the 23-year-old Argentina international currently on loan at a Ligue 1 club owned by Chelsea’s parent company BlueCo, has been heavily linked with a move to west London. A farewell post on his Instagram in May fuelled speculation, though reports suggest a fee has yet to be formally agreed. Barco features in Argentina’s World Cup squad, and his international commitments may be delaying an announcement.
Lewis Hall is another option under consideration. The left-back, a product of Chelsea’s Cobham academy, completed a permanent £28 million move to Newcastle following an impressive loan spell at St. James’ Park, but is reportedly being monitored for a potential return to Stamford Bridge more than two years after his original departure.
Alonso is also said to be eyeing targets from further afield as he looks to ensure he is not left short on the left flank heading into the new season.
