Como president cools Federico Chiesa transfer as Liverpool demand too high a fee
Federico Chiesa is expected to leave Liverpool this summer after two frustrating seasons at Anfield, but Como president Mirwan Suwarso has indicated the winger's price tag exceeds the Italian club's budget.
Federico Chiesa’s path out of Liverpool this summer has hit a significant obstacle, with Como president Mirwan Suwarso suggesting the Italian winger is priced beyond the club’s reach. Chiesa, 28, has made just 50 appearances for the Reds since joining from Juventus, with only nine of those coming as starts.
Suwarso, speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, was candid when asked about a potential move for the winger. “We are looking at many players,” he said. “The price for those players is a bit higher than the range we have in mind, though.” Como, who have secured a place in next season’s Champions League, had been among the clubs monitoring Chiesa’s situation.
Chiesa himself has made clear that his future at Anfield is uncertain. “If I don’t find consistency in the Premier League, I’ll have to look elsewhere,” he said. “I barely played in my first year at Liverpool, and in the last one, very little.” He added that he plans to travel with the squad to a pre-season training camp in the United States before holding talks with the club and new head coach Andoni Iraola.
The Italian also reflected on the January transfer window, when Liverpool blocked an exit despite his limited playing time. “In January, the club and [Arne] Slot told me I couldn’t leave; they needed me, partly for numerical reasons,” he said. “I understood the situation and I was left smiling. Liverpool is always talked about; last year they helped me win the Premier League.”
Chiesa has two years remaining on his contract, which complicates any potential departure and gives Liverpool leverage over his valuation — leverage that appears to be frustrating prospective suitors.
The winger’s situation is one of several Liverpool will need to resolve this summer as Iraola begins reshaping the squad. Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson have already departed on free transfers, with Robertson joining Tottenham Hotspur. Defender Ibrahima Konate is also leaving and is expected to complete a move to Real Madrid, while Harvey Elliott could follow after a disappointing loan spell at Aston Villa.
