Commentator Warren Barton left bloodied by projectile during Colombia's 3-1 win over Uzbekistan
Former Newcastle and England defender Warren Barton was struck by a projectile and left bleeding during his commentary duties at the Azteca Stadium, as Colombia beat Uzbekistan 3-1 to go top of World Cup Group K.
Warren Barton was left “dripping with blood” after being struck by a projectile during Colombia’s 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Wednesday, in a chaotic atmosphere that also saw both commentators drenched with beer in the first half.
Barton, the former Newcastle United and England defender, was working alongside Jacqui Oatley when the incident occurred in the closing stages of the Group K fixture. Despite the injury, he continued his commentary duties through to the final whistle.
The trouble began earlier in the match when Daniel Munoz broke the deadlock for Colombia, prompting a surge of celebration in the stands that left both commentators soaked. Barton was then hit by a separate projectile late in the contest, though the nature of the object was not confirmed.
On the pitch, Luis Diaz was the standout performer for Colombia, assisting the opener before adding a second goal himself. Uzbekistan briefly threatened a comeback through Abbosbek Fayzullaev, whose strike was a historic first World Cup goal for his country. Jaminton Campaz then settled the contest with a stoppage-time third to send the Azteca into a frenzy.
The result lifts Colombia to the top of Group K, moving them above Portugal, who were held to a draw by DR Congo earlier on Wednesday.
