Clashes between Argentine and Algerian supporters erupt in New York before World Cup match
Confrontations between Argentina and Algeria fans broke out at Times Square in New York overnight Monday to Tuesday, just hours before their Group J clash at Kansas City. Several arrests were made.
Clashes between Argentine and Algerian supporters erupted at Times Square in New York overnight Monday to Tuesday, just hours before the opening match of Group J of the 2026 FIFA World Cup between the two nations.
Footage captured by a journalist on the scene showed exchanges of blows between members of the two groups before police intervention. Officers made several arrests. No official toll — injuries or number of arrests — was immediately communicated.
These incidents contrasted with the festive atmosphere that had prevailed in the district until then. New York, one of the tournament’s host cities, had notably witnessed scenes of brotherhood between Moroccan and Brazilian supporters the previous weekend, praised on social media.
The Argentina-Algeria match, which pits the 2022 World Cup champions against the Fennecs, takes place at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. It is the first official confrontation between the two teams in a FIFA World Cup final tournament.
