Clarke walks out of post-match interview as Scotland's World Cup hopes hang by a thread
Steve Clarke cut short his post-match press conference with a terse 'I don't even think about that' after Scotland were beaten 3-0 by Brazil in Group C, leaving their round-of-32 chances dependent on other results this weekend.
Steve Clarke walked away from his post-match interview after Scotland were beaten 3-0 by Brazil in a World Cup 2026 Group C fixture, leaving the nation’s hopes of reaching the knockout rounds in serious jeopardy.
Vinicius Junior scored twice to extend his record of finding the net in every match of the tournament so far, with Matheus Cunha adding a third to seal a comfortable Brazilian victory. The result leaves Scotland third in Group C in their first appearance at a major tournament in nearly 30 years.
Clarke was blunt in his assessment of the performance. “We made it difficult for ourselves. That’s it. We gave them the goals. We gave them the game they wanted. Disappointing,” he said. When pressed on what comes next for his side, he replied simply, “I don’t even think about that,” before ending the interview and walking away.
Scotland’s only points came from their earlier win over Haiti, which keeps alive a slim possibility of advancing as one of the strongest third-placed teams. That route, however, depends entirely on how other groups play out this weekend.
The margin of defeat proved costly. Had Scotland lost by two goals or fewer, their chances of progressing would have remained reasonably solid according to the tournament’s third-place qualification criteria. A three-goal deficit has significantly narrowed those prospects.
The squad now faces an anxious wait to discover whether their Group C campaign is enough to carry them into the round of 32, with the outcome entirely out of their hands.
