Chimaev drops rematch push, targets Strickland-Imavov 2 winner for middleweight title shot
Khamzat Chimaev has stepped back from demanding an immediate rematch with UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland, saying he will wait and fight the winner of Strickland's anticipated second bout with Nassourdine Imavov.
Khamzat Chimaev has abandoned his push for an immediate rematch with UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland, saying he will instead target whoever emerges from a second Strickland-Nassourdine Imavov fight being targeted for later this year.
Chimaev had been vocal about wanting a swift title rematch after losing the UFC middleweight belt to Strickland, but the former champion has now shifted his position. With Imavov — on a five-fight winning streak since his own previous loss to Strickland — widely reported as the frontrunner for the next title shot, Chimaev says the situation makes sense.
“No, there’s no surprise,” Chimaev told Ushatayka. “How long has Imavov been waiting now? Probably around two years. He’s already the contender. Whoever wins, we’ll take him.”
Chimaev also put to rest speculation about a move up to light heavyweight, a possibility that had been floated by his team in the wake of the Strickland defeat. He was unequivocal when asked whether he would leave the 185-pound division.
“No,” he said. “Until we break everybody at 185, I’m not going anywhere.”
The comments represent a notable change in tone from Chimaev, who had previously made clear his desire to reclaim the title as quickly as possible. By acknowledging Imavov’s standing as a legitimate contender and committing to remain at middleweight, Chimaev appears to be recalibrating for a longer-term run at the championship rather than seeking a shortcut back to the top.
