Chelsea are pursuing a £60m deal to bring Lewis Hall back to Stamford Bridge this summer, according to a report from TEAMtalk, with the move threatening to cut out Manchester United, who also have the Newcastle United full-back on their shortlist.

The 21-year-old left the Blues in 2024 in a deal worth around £35m after a successful loan spell at St James’ Park, making him one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings at the time. Now, with Newcastle under pressure to raise funds to comply with PSR rules — having already banked £70m from Anthony Gordon’s sale this summer — the club may be forced to sell at a significant profit.

Hall and his representatives are said to be open to a move ahead of next season, though no destination has been decided. His absence from England’s World Cup 2026 squad gives him additional time to weigh his options during the summer window.

Chelsea’s search for a left-back was accelerated after Nathaniel Brown, another target, opted to join Bayern Munich instead. Cucurella’s departure to Real Madrid has left Xabi Alonso, who took charge at Stamford Bridge this summer, with a clear gap to fill in his rebuilt squad.

Hall is not the only option Chelsea are considering. Alonso is reportedly keen to reunite with Bayer Leverkusen’s Alex Grimaldo, the 30-year-old Spain international who worked closely with the manager during his time in Germany. Juventus wing-back Andrea Cambiaso is also on Chelsea’s radar, valued by the club’s recruitment team for his ability to operate on either flank.

The Hall deal, if it materialises, would represent a swift turnaround on a player Chelsea sold just 12 months ago — and a blow to Manchester United’s own plans to strengthen at left-back this window.
