Chelsea snatch Lamine Camara from Liverpool to seal Monaco midfielder signing

Chelsea have beaten Liverpool to the signing of AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, with Italian transfer reporter Nicolò Schira reporting the Blues are in the final stages of agreeing terms with the 22-year-old Senegalese international.

Both clubs had been weighing up moves for Camara, whose performances in Ligue 1 had established him as one of Europe’s most coveted young central midfielders. While Liverpool hesitated to firm up their interest, Chelsea moved decisively to advance discussions and close the deal.

Chelsea’s aggressive late-window spending appears to be funded by the anticipated sale of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City. With a substantial fee expected from that deal, the Blues are simultaneously pushing to land Camara and AS Roma’s Manu Kone, adding physicality and tenacity to their midfield before Fernandez’s exit is formally confirmed.

For Liverpool, missing out on Camara deepens an already precarious squad situation. Head coach Andoni Iraola currently has just three recognised central midfield options — Dominik Szoboszlai, who may also be needed at right-back, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis Mac Allister — to cover a schedule that spans four competitions.

Iraola’s tactical system is particularly demanding on midfielders, built around relentless high-energy pressing, vertical play, and intensive off-the-ball work. Operating with such a thin central midfield pool risks leaving the Spaniard with difficult rotation decisions throughout the autumn.

The loss of Camara also threatens to reopen a long-running frustration at Anfield. Liverpool supporters have repeatedly pointed to the club’s failure to replace Fabinho since the Brazilian departed three years ago. Camara’s blend of tenacity and athleticism was seen as a potential solution to that defensive midfield void — a gap that will now remain unfilled as the transfer window closes.
