Chelsea agree £47.5m fee to sell Cucurella to Real Madrid after four years at Stamford Bridge
Marc Cucurella is set to leave Chelsea for Real Madrid in a deal worth up to £47.5m, ending a four-year spell at Stamford Bridge. The Spain left-back will join under new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, who is targeting defensive reinforcements.
Marc Cucurella is poised to join Real Madrid from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £47.5m, with an agreement reached between the two clubs. Real Madrid will pay an initial £43.15m (€55m), with a further £4.3m (€5m) available in bonuses.
The transfer represents a modest financial loss for Chelsea, who paid Brighton £62m for the left-back in 2022. Cucurella spent four years at Stamford Bridge, departing as one of the more significant defensive signings of the club’s recent era.
Real Madrid’s move for Cucurella comes under the direction of Jose Mourinho, who has been installed as manager following Florentino Perez’s victory in the club’s latest presidential elections. Mourinho, who previously managed both Chelsea and Manchester United, is understood to be targeting the 27-year-old to strengthen his defensive options.
Cucurella’s time in west London was not without turbulence. He struggled to win over supporters in his opening season but gradually established himself as a reliable and technically accomplished left-back. His rehabilitation was completed on the international stage, where he became a key figure for Spain, thriving at Euro 2024 and earning a place in the tournament’s team of the tournament as the nation claimed the European Championship.
